Chores
12.24.12
Bria looks out the window, the sun is still high in the air,
plenty time to wake up and do chores. She sees her Jarl still lying asleep.
Bria tosses on an old tattered kirtle with pale red pink tint on the bottom
form smashing berries with her feet a few days ago. Bria slips on some boots
that are a lil worn out, she dares not to ruin her nicer shoes, will need those
good ones for the much colder days. Bria brushes through her hair with her
fingers gently and opens the heavy wooden door tip toeing outside. There is
snow about the ground, but not a blizzard amount. Bria grabs her cloak from a
hanging spot near the door so she doesn’t freeze.
Bria sees some girls already off to their chores, some
following some Jarls and Mistresses around, and others taking break under a
tree eating some of the fruit that the tree dawns. Bria walks to the shed were
all the baskets and tools are kept for the girls. Bria picks up a basket and a
bag of tools. She walks off towards the vulo pens. All the vulo seemed to
wander off from their nests. Bria takes advantage of this and bends over the
side of the pen gathering the eggs into her basket before any of the little
feathery friends notice what she is doing. Bria then backs away and smiles wiping
her hands on her kirtle with fourteen eggs in her basket. Bria walks over to
the cherry bush that survived the early winter this year, well, somewhat. Bria takes
out a pouch and fills it with a handful of berries that look okay. This will be
the last harvest for many of the fruit, the animals and such will have to be
taken care of more though.
Bria ties the sack and puts it alongside the eggs in her
basket. There were a few girls skipping doing chores together, though, Bria wanted
to have more time with her Jarl today so she decided to do her chores faster
and with less chit chat to avoid being yelled at. The other girls giggled and
talked as they worked slower. Bria walks to the tospit tree, the bitter fruit Bria
loved. She picked what remained, it was few, but would hold over a few days at
least. Maybe if they dried the fruit, it would last longer and there could be fruit
chips. Bria got to taste these instead of her gruel sometimes, as a treat, this
was rare though.
Bria has to face that with the winter becoming stronger;
harvest with food will be less. More putting dung in a sack, gathering wood,
some cooking, cleaning, upkeep of the look of the city. Not much picking of
food, soon the sa tarna will be sparse, there is much to harvest of it now, but
near the end of winter, the city might go near hungry if there isn’t enough
harvested. Bria had a mind set to do all she could to make the city’s winter
much easier and more bountiful this winter.
Bria walks into the long hall with no one inside expect a few
girls refilling jars and cabinets. Bria walks towards a smaller fancier basket
and puts the eggs in it. She reaches up on a shelf and pulls down a bowl with
other berries in sacks in it; she drops off her cherries there.
Bria sees some girls walk in and out restocking and taking out
old rotten food and putting it aside to be taken out and have something useful
done with it. Bria takes the few tospits she found in a large bowl with a few
other ones. Bria sees one with a few bruises, she takes that one out and puts it
in the bag of bad food and walks back out of the long hall.
Bria walks back to the shed and marks a check next to her
name on a piece of a scroll that tracks who did what. Bria sets down her basket
now empty and her bag of tools and what not, and places both items back on the
shelf were she found them before. Bria walks back to her Jarl’s residence and
takes off her work clothes and goes back to snuggle up next to him until he
awakes.
